FYI: The Guy Who Exposed Systematic and Covert Editing of WIKIPEDIA by CIA etc in 2007 is Now Facing 20 Years in a Federal Prison on "unrelated" charges!

A Tale of Two (bit) Coins
In 2019 the US government indicted Virgil Griffith for......(wait for it!)........talking.

Giving a speech, actually.
In North Korea.
That place that celebrity baskeball players visit, and even on occasion, peddle their own "virtual coinage" (without getting the Hammer brought down, n.b.) and which hosts drunken frat boys who can't seem to handle their liquor or comport themselves while abroad.
The US-State Media reports his connections to Etherium and the whole bitcoin movement but it seems to be a deliberate omission (and also an attempted cover-up by the State Media of the Corporate State of America since Reuters now seems to have attempted to delete the stories from 2007 which pertain to Mr. Griffith's first appearance in the news.

This is important for several reasons, not least of which is what appears to be (well, is obviously) a concerted crackdown by the Corporate state on its critics. We've seen this since 2017 or earlier but since 2017 it's been quite pervasive and blatant with the creation of dubious sites such as "prop-or-not" which have gone hand in hand with the tightening of censorship of opposing views and the relegation of such views to the sidelines. (it should be remembered, right, that DARPA created the internet and not as a "tool to free our minds and commerce" but as a counterinsurgency weapon. I'm just preachin to the choir and wanted to vent here.
Here is a link to Mr. Griffith's page - read his own story.
Don't believe anything. Question everything.

New to crypto.

I have a few questions about Bitcoin vs other currencies. I’m not sure I understand how other cryptos are suppose to survive if there is a universal currency accepted everywhere. I have a few Etherium coins but I’m thinking I kinda missed the boat. How can any other currency compete in value? I feel like I just have a handful of beads I’m hoping that will become gold one day.. tl;Dr: how do crypto’s compete with each other? What’s the difference? Other than just the fun and wacky names.

Happy New Year! Also, time to pay your Capital Tax! Here are all possibilities of a taxable event for cryptocurrencies. (US Residence)

So you Invested in some Bitcoin this year and made some sweet, sweet Fiat? Maybe you traded your Bitcoin, to Etherium. Then maybe you traded your Etherium for some Bitcoin and some Ripple. What are you taxed on? I hope to answer these questions.
Selling for Fiat
So the first way that you'll owe GAINS TAX is if you sold bitcoin for money, at a profit! It does NOT matter when you bought the Crypto. It only matters that you sold it in the last year. So if you bought a bitcoin 1 month ago for 8k. And sold today at 13k. You NEED to report a $5,000 on your taxable gains.
Trading for Other Crypto
The other scenerio when you need to report is when you trade for other other currencies. When a trade commences it is treated as you selling and then buying whatever your trading for. So if you bought bitcoin 1 month ago at 8k. And traded it to BCash today while bitcoin was 13k. It is treated that you sold the bitcoin at that price and you need to report the 5k.
This might sound unfair, however the same method is used for trading rare materials (Gold, Silver), Stocks, other fiat currencies, and any other property type investments.
Multiple Buys and Sells or trades...
Note: If you bought Bitcoin at $8k, Sold at 13K Bought at $19k, Sold at $12K... You made $5k, then Lost $7k. So your capital gains is -$2k. You pay the total of all your transactions.
Short Term Vs Long Term
This is short, but if you sold (or traded) crypto-currencies that you've hedl for over 1 year that is considered a Long Term Investment. If it comes out as a negative you can carry those loses for 7 years. You can not carry loses from short term investments (Bought and sold(traded) in less than 365 days).
So if you bought bitcoin 2 years ago for $20,000 (You got scammed?) and sold last month for $8k, you have a long term lose of $12,000. This $12,000 lose can be added to your income next year so your gains are less. (They carry over for 7 years).
Mining
For miners, Mining income is treated as self-employed income, NOT capital gains tax. When a coin is mined you report the income from the worth of the coin from when it was mined. So if you mined 1 btc (Good job...) 1 month ago at $8k. You'll report $8k under self-employed income. Say you sold that bitcoin you mined last month today for 13k. You will need to report both the 8k income, and the 5k capital gains. (These are taxed at different rates depending on your income...) Expenses are not included in the cost bases. So you WON'T subtract $100 from the 8k. However you can add any expense at the end of the year if you operate your mining operations like a LLC or somthing!
Final Thoughts
From my research (Professional accountant, amateur crypto-dude) these are the cases of taxable transactions. If you want Crypto-currency to be taken seriously, you need to treat it like a serious currency, which is taxable. There are ways to reduce your taxes, but I'm not going to outline them, since some of them are grey areas. Also, if you haven't been actively trying to reduce taxes until now... It's too late for 2017.
Be smart. Hire a professional to assist you if you've made massive gains. It's better to pay a tax professional .05 btc than to lose all your bitcoin because you technically laundered money because of your ignorance. (That doesn't hold up in court).
Disclaimer
I'm just some guy typing this at my in-laws house over holiday break. Gone half crazy after spending time with them. While I am a professional accountant, I'm also a random redditor on the internet. Do your own research, or hire someone to do all this for you. I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE! Hopefully that gets the SEC and IRS off my back...
Edit: Missed one...
Making a Purchase
When you buy something! Oh boy! So you treat this as gains from the purchase price of your coin to the sell price of your coin. So if you bought 1 btc for $8k. And you bought a new car for $8k today when BTC was worth $13k. You would pay the gains tax on what you "Sold" to buy that car. This gets complicated so I'll try to format it the best I can...
You sold $8,000 worth of the bitcoin that is worth 13K. So 8/13 or .615%. Without going into FIFO or FILO options... We'll consider FIFO (Don't worry about terminology, just giving it incase YOU want to go look it up!)
You'll need to take .615% of your original investment to get your cost basis. $8k * .615 = $4,920.
$4,920 is the amount you'll consider that is your original investment, and you sold for 8k. So your capital gains is $8k - 4,920 = $3,080 <---- This is your taxable gains. THIS IS A TAXABLE EVENT! In regards to transaction fees... Technically The fee is part of the sale, so add that to the total of what was spent.
There's a bill that is currently being looked at that will make any purchase under $600 non taxable. Until this is passed any purchase is taxable!

Percentage of Portfolio

Just curious. What percentage of your portfolio is Nano vs Bitcoin and Etherium? How much are ypu betting on Nano vs the rest of the crypto market? I thought it would be fun to have a discussion on this.

New rule! Also are cryptocurrencies an investment, will there be a crash? Everything answered here!

This is going to be the only crypto post for now and an announcement:
Rule 6: Bitcoins & cryptocurrenies should be discussed in CryptoCurrency. Posts regarding this topic will be automatically removed.
If there's a stock correlated with cryptocurrencies, like coinbase going IPO, then that's fine, you might have to message the mods after posting to have it approved, no big deal.
Also if you're questioning whether something is an investment or not, just search for it on personalfinance. For general currency trading strategies, see forex .
If you're wondering if bitcoins are an investment or if there will be a crash, read on.

Are cryptocurrencies an investment?

This post is going to deal with bitcoins & cryptocurrencies as an investment... they're more speculative. All currencies are speculative mostly due to how the forex market works, but more because of exchange rates between countries keep currencies balanced (including inflation, country debt, interest rates, political & economic stability, etc), so you can only profit in price fluctuations.
Sure you could buy the currency of a depressed country, like Mexico decades ago, and then hold in the hopes it'll go up (which it did for Mexico), but that's also speculation (no one knew Mexico would pay off so much debt).
Bitcoins are also affected by other countries' currency values, but more so by the future expectation of legitimacy, world wide adoption, limited gains from mining, and eventual limit in supply. But at any given moment the United States could pay off more debt, raise interest rates to reduce inflation (or cause deflation), grow GDP, or even reduce the supply of USD all of which would increase the value of USD (keep in mind bitcoins can't do any of these things).
Far too many people are treating cryptocoins as an investment because currently (June 5th 2017) a lot of crypto investors are worth a lot of money, god bless you people, so this post will also help you determine if we're headed for a crypto crash and maybe you can keep those profits.

Should I invest in cryptocurrencies?

Understand that an investment is something you hope will go up in the future or provide income, both of which for the long term vs speculation which profits on short term inefficiencies.
Speculative securities are typically commodities, options, bonds, and currencies, but also stocks that are volatile enough to give you extreme returns or extreme loses.

Examples of investments:

Examples of speculation:

Reducing the risk of speculation

Typically for speculation you reduce risk by reducing your trade size and timeframe, but since you're trying to invest into something that is speculative, you can try:
Asset allocation, a strategy that reduces risk.. If you're 80% stocks, 15% bonds, 4% gold, and 1% bitcoins, if something were to happen to bitcoins, you still have 99% of your money.
But even very aggressive long term portfolios leave speculation out completely and just go 100% stocks because stocks benefit from growth while speculative securities like gold benefit from global turmoil in the short term. Only mid risk & mid term portfolios can take advantage of gold's speculative returns.
I also mention asset allocation because many crypto investors have been using this strategy on a portfolio of 100% crypto coins, but that doesn't help you reduce the overall risk of crypto coins, you're just reducing the risk of 1 speculative asset with another speculative asset. 100% crypto portfolio would face the same risks such as being made illegal, IRS aggressively hunting down crypto profits, a drop in correlated coin markets, or just a loss of popularity would all cause a sell off. Even the USD or Chinese currencies becoming more valuable would reduce the value of crypto coins.

Should I buy coins right now?

Cryptocoins are a better investment after a period of consolidation when volatility has stabilized:

Bitcoin 2013/2014 speculation, chart

Bitcoin 2015 consolidation, chart

Source Bitstamp exchange, while the volume is #2 to GDAX, Bitstamp is better to look at for historical price/data, more charts here.

RSI & MACD key for above charts and primer

Analyzing overbought signals

So the first chart above have RSI & MACD screaming that bitcoin is overbought and you shouldn't invest in 2013/2014.
The black squares in the 2nd chart show consolidation and reduced volatility, a "better" time to invest. If you were trading short term, it would be a whole different story, and there would be opportunities to buy & short, but since this is written for investing, the small overbought signals are ignored, so if you were to buy Bitcoin at $300 inside the first blacksquare (2nd chart) and then it suddenly drops to 25%, it's okay because the volatility is much lower compared to previous price movements (nothing compared to 80% loss in the 1st chart). Any investor would tell you a 25% drop is terrible, but bitcoins are speculative and that kind of drop is pretty damn good for this level of volatility.

Nothing goes straight up forever

and anything that comes near this vertical incline will eventually lose 80% to near 100%, always happens, it's usually preceded by emotions (price euphoria), attention, and increased volume, all classic signs that something is becoming riskier.
Other speculative securities gaining multiples and then losing 80% to near 100% of value:

Notable comments on reddit:

*This is just to get you guys looking at different subs on this topic, and yeah it's mostly anti-crypto, but don't let that discourage you.

Is Bitcoin going to crash?

Maybe, the signals are getting louder, you tell me: The only chart you wanted to see this entire time.
So based on the above chart, is bitcoin overbought? MACD levels are the same as 2013's crash, but the increased in value is around 4.3x or 2.4x (depending on which you look at), so maybe we'll see another spike before a crash, I don't know, it's up to interpretation right now. There's the emotional price levels of 3000 and 4000 that we might have no problem getting to in an overbought environment before a correction. And how big will the correction be? I think 80%, but it very well could be around 50% down to $1200, the previous level of resistance which would become support.
I put everything above in its own wiki here.
Well I hope that helps everyone. Sorry to anyone that may feel butthurt on classifying cryptocoins as speculation, I hope you understand the facts. Feel free to argue or agree with this. If I made any mistakes and you point them out, I'll correct them and give you credit for it in an update to this post and the wiki.
Also the automod will is just going to blanket remove posts (not comments) with the following keywords {crypto, bitcoin, btc, etherium, altcoin} (see update 4 below) (this will eventually get relaxed if Coinbase ever IPOs) and then it'll send the user this message:
"Sorry your post[link] was removed in stocks because of rule 6: Bitcoins & cryptocurrenies should be discussed in CryptoCurrency. You can find more information in our are-cryptocurrencies-investments wiki. If you're trying to discuss a non-OTC stock related to cryptocoins like Coinbase IPO, or this was just a mistake, message the mods and they'll approve your post, thanks."
Update: Created wiki, added relevant websites and sub reddits. Also turned on automod reply.
Update2: those relavant websites and subreddits I put into the wiki, thanks u/dross99 for recommending ethereum

Relevant websites/wikis

Relevant subreddits

  • CryptoCurrency - main sub to learn about all bit & altcoins
  • ethtrader - trading eth
  • ethereum - for more eth information
  • btc - the place to have bitcoin discussions or r/CryptoCurrency; while Bitcoin does have a lot of information on Bitcoins in general, you'll find many reddit subs completely opposed to Bitcoin for heavy censorship of discussions, especially those critical of bitcoins, so you're better off reading the sub's wikis and discussing bitcoins in btc & r/CryptoCurrency
  • personalfinance
Update3: Shoutout to the mods on CryptoCurrency
Update4: Updated auto mod keywords, it's not a blanket catch all, a little completed to understand if you don't know regex but it looks like this
"crypto ?(trading|investing)","(should(| I)|could(| I)|can(| I)|how to|is it worth) (buy|sell|mine|min)(|ing) (btc|btcs|bitcoin|ether|etherium|eth|litecoin|ripple|altcoin)"

A Guide To ICO investing Bitcoin Millions: Is It Too Late For You?

You've been probably reading the news about all those kids who manage to become filthy rich simply by investing in Bitcoin in 2013.
News like these usually make me feel mad because I missed the chance to buy Bitcoin when one of my friends told me that I should invest in Bitcoin back in 2014.
Now the Bitcoin seems more like a gold mine rush because everybody thinks that he would be able to make millions easily.
If you are like one of those people who want to make a quick buck on cryptocurrency, I advise you stop. You lost the game here. There's no easy money to be made on the crypto market anymore.
Here's Why Making Money On Cryptocurrency Will Become Harder In 2018
The market is oversaturated with cryptocurrency traders. There're people who are going to take your money because you simply don't know the game good enough.
Right now the whole market cap is crushing and in order to make profits, you need to be really smart.
Let's say you want to buy Cardano at its current price of $0,45 per coin. You see the graph and you notice that Cardano used to cost $0.77 a few weeks ago, and you are like maybe Cardano will go up again, and you buy Cardano.
Who sold you the coin?
Is it the exchange itself? Is it Binance who sold you the coin?
The answer is no!
You bought the coin from people who already were holding the coin. They got the coin before the coin hit the exchange. They bought it dirt cheap on ICO presale level and they sold it to you 20x or even 30x the ICO price.
If you know some good coins that are already listed on coinmarketcap.com Stop there! It is usually too late to acquire them because somebody both them a few years ago. Usually, those are the people who joined the ICO presales or the team members of the blockchain project.
Cryptocurrency market is very dynamic and people got hyped easily. So what should you do instead if you want to still benefit from the cryptocurrency market?
This what I am also doing...
Be the one who buys the coin first!
Go online and start researching cryptocurrency projects that are up to launch an ICO and start following their social media. There are few major important things that I am looking for:
Factor #1 The Main Lesson From A Coin That Cost Less Than $1 in 2015 And Reached $1,389 In Less Than 3 years!
Every cryptocurrency project needs a strong team of developers. They'll be the one who would create the project. Also, I'm trying to invest my ETH into projects that have young teams. Many of the successful crypto projects have very young teams.
For example, the founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin started the project when he was in his early twenties. The cost of Etherium hit $1,389 at its peak, and back in 2015, an Ethereum cost less than $1.
Is there a chance to found the next Vitalik Buterin? Just look for a young enthusiastic team.
Factor #2 Good Marketing And Big Idea
Whenever I invest in a project I aim to go with the idea that is practical. I don't invest in projects that I don't understand. I will visit the website and the social media to see if the team has good marketing. If I like the website and the idea I would go to the Telegram channel of the project.
You can learn a lot just by visiting a Telegram chat. I would ask a few questions to see if the team is responding. I used to think that the size of the Telegram group would matter, but there are a lot of ways to invite fake bots to a Telegram chat. So I would stay away from a group that has way too many unresponsive chat visitors.
Factor #3 ICO That Is Going To Make You Money vs ICO That Is Trying To Steal Your Hard-Earned Money
I do internet marketing for 4 years now. Whenever I go to a blockchain website I notice that a big majority of the projects don't have a long-term vision.
They are all about raising money with the ICO. I am just curious what happens next? So, I usually read the whitepaper, try to find out if they have set a road map. Usually, they have that stated on the website under a "Road Map".
So, I look for projects that have a long-term vision. It is very hard to see ROI in less than two years. I think this is the reasonable cycle.
ICO Projects You Should Consider
I am not a financial advisor. However, I did a great deal of thinking and researching ICOs. I am going share a list the top 3 ICOs that I personally invested in and I intend to invest in once the ICO is out for a presale.
  1. Rentberry
I invested in Rentberry earlier this year. They already had a solid base of customers and they're building a decentralized home rental platform. Based in the USA, the team is supercool. They raised 30M, unfortunately if you want to invest now the project ICO project is already closed.
  1. CrowdMachine
CrowdMachine has a very good idea. Their project aims to develop a system that requires no coding, enabling anyone to create decentralized apps and smart contracts without limitation. So basically, with CrowdMachine everybody will be able to create a blockchain without knowing how to code. This ICO start early April.
  1. Cryptopus
Cryptopus might be a long shot. However, back in 2013 Etherium was a very long shot as well. This Russian ICO develops a blockchain brokerage marketplace. I personally know the team because once I stumble upon the project, I wanted to be a part of it, and I joined as an advisor.
In Conclusion:
If you are looking for a coin that has a huge potential you might want to take a look at Cryptopus and CrowdMachine.
CrowdMachine has a BIG idea and might change the blockchain game forever. ICO is out soon so definitely worth following.
Cryptopus has a very cool young team and amazing advisors on the board. ICO is currently ON! Could Cryptopus be the next Ethereum?
We are about to see!

Raiden network cost vs. Eherium

Guys, did you think about the potential cost of Raiden vs. Etherium? If Raiden makes in future majority of micro transactions on ether than its market cap should be not less than 20% of Etherium. Today it is roughly 14 bln. Ether should also close the gap with Bitcoin and give let say x5 in the next couple of years at least. So Raiden market cap in this case would be 14x5=70bln with 1 token cost = 700$ (100mln total supply) I want to hodl it till that! What do you think?

I am Overwhelmed. what is happening?

So did UASF happen? aug1st? yes? no?
Did Segwit activate? yes? no?
Will Bitcoin Cash survive? probability yes vs. no?
Will 2x activate? probability yes vs. no?
Is etherium still a thing or is bitcoin officially much cooler again.
I am overwhelmed. there is always a lot going on, but this is INSANE.
Where can I buy BCH? my current plan is to just leave my btc alone on paper until i understand how to actually split this stuff. if i take coinbase btc and combine it with my paper wallet btc that is ALSO btc . . . does the universe explode?

NXT is Bitcoin of the Future: In both good and bad ways.

I've been intently following the development of NXT by reading as much as I can about it and following along with the developers discussions over at bitcointalk.org's mega-thread.
Nxt stands out above most other "alternative" digital currencies, mainly because it's not a clone, or "fork" of bitcoin. There are only a few "coins" out there right now that can make this claim. I put the word 'coin' in quotes because another thing that most of the Bitcoin 2.0 currencies have in common is that they tend to shy away from being called coins and put a lot of focus on adding totally new features to what Bitcoin does. They usually like to be referred to as ecosystems, and will often correct you if you refer to their platform as merely a "coin".
The ecosystems who are emerging most prominently include Etherium, Master Coin, Colored Coins, Emunie, Ripple, Nxt and Counterparty.
Out of all the emerging ecosystems, I've decided that Nxt is the one I feel has the most potential. Part of this was getting a bit "suckered in" by all of the existing marketing that made claims that Nxt has "instant transactions" (you only need to look to the right hand side of this page to see an example of this), only to find out that this particular feature has not yet been implemented and the common claims of 1000 transactions per second is possibly unattainable.
Although I felt like I got hit with a classic "Bait and Switch", being that crypto is the new wild west and caveat emptor is very much in effect, I didn't take it too personally. A lot of the marketing is disjointed and uncentralized ( the developers are actually proud to say Nxt has decentralized development) so it's hard to blame any one person for making these claims a bit prematurely.
What's kept me from dumping all my Nxt in disgust over being "lied" to, was the fact the "switch" that I took the "bait" for was actually pretty compelling in itself. This being the upcoming "decentralized asset exchange" which I think has a lot of potential, at least to make my investment grow even if I personally am not interested in creating my very own coin or starting an IPO any time soon (I'm just a shameless and unabashed speculator who would like to make a profit on my holdings-which makes me a bit of a pariah over at bitcointalk.org). The AE goes live sometime in April so I'm holding or HODLING as the wacky crew over at bitcointalk likes to say until I see what happens with the price.
What a lot of people say about Nxt is that it's like "looking at Bitcoin in the future" which it kind of is. Currently you do have to install java and use batch files to get it running, but one click installers are around the corner. Once you do get it up and running though, even the basic client is very much easier to understand and use than Bitcoin is. You only have to manage one address, the interface is right in your web browser (but run locally so no SSL needed) and sending and receiving Nxt is about as close to sending an email as I've seen yet.
Nxt's transaction speeds have been faster than Bitcoins, though I can't say how much of this is due to having a much smaller network or not. You also have to wait for ten confirmations vs. Bitcoin's six to be absolutely sure there are no double-spends so it's really hard to say if Nxt is a lot faster than Bitcoin....yet.
One of the lead developers claims to be working on implementing "transparent Forging" as we speak, which he says will get Nxt to about 10 TPS at first, then 100 and finally 1000 TPS which is about as fast as a Visa Transaction. All in all I agree with the assessment that using Nxt is like using the Bitcoin of the Future.
Another great thing about Nxt is that it's 100% Proof-Of-Stake, meaning Nxt is not "mined" like bitcoin is. The coins have all already been created from the genesis block and this is another way using Nxt is a lot like using Future Bitcoin, because one day all the BTC will have been mined and the "miners" will have to exist on transaction fees alone. Using Nxt, we get a little peek into the future of what that day might be like because the "forgers", who protect the network and verify transactions are rewarded in the same way.
Since nxt has a lot smaller network, it's still hard to say what kinds of rewards 'forgers" might receive for their efforts if and when Nxt becomes more popular. As of right now, Forging is pretty much an act of altruism for all but the largest stakeholders. Also, the transaction fee is currently a ridiculous sum of 1 Nxt, which will either be changed to .01 nxt or .1 nxt in the near future depending which developer or community member at bitcointalk.org you ask. All I know is that it's getting changed to either .1 or .01
The common response is that Forgers will receive about 1% annual return on their holdings and that this is reasonable since there's no expensive, electricity hungry mining equipment involved. You can forge using a cell phone.
One potential problem I've been concerned about with that approach is that .01 Nxt or .1 Nxt might be a reasonable fee right now, since it's trading at about .04 cents each, but what if the price rises unexpectedly by any considerable amount? Seems to me that nxt users will be simultaneously rewarded and punished for holding Nxt and using the system as the fee for using it rises right along with the price. Bitcoin and others also use static fees, but those fees are kept extremely low so the price would have to go up a ridiculous amount for a price rise to have a negative affect on actual trading. With Nxt, even a price rise to $50.00 USD per Nxt would mean a sudden fee of $5.00 USD or .50 cents depending on where they put the decimal.
Nxt's fees in my opinion will be far too close to the value of the main unit for sudden price spike not to potentially have a negative affect on the ecosystem itself. This appears to be one of the consequences of the need to reward miners/forgers with transaction fees alone. Will Bitcoin have a similar problem in the future? Any significant price rise in the asset itself might put a negative pressure on trading as people become unwilling or reluctant to pay the now more expensive fee.
I've been told by the developers that if the price rises that much they will just lower the fee by updating the software, but as we all know, crypto-currency can be very volatile. Do we really want to live in a word where we have to update our clients again and again as the price rises and falls, often rapidly and drastically? Are we to just trust that they will do this quickly enough to avoid the system grinding to a halt or at least slowing to a crawl? The developers already have enough trouble agreeing on what the current fee will be lowered to. How are we to expect them to react quickly and correctly in a crisis while value collapses? I don't even want to go into how one of the developers told me that a drastic price rise will never happen. It's just too depressing. To my mind, programming is the art of anticipating the unexpected and planning for it and not just "crossing bridges when you come to them".
As I've been able to log into the test version of the Asset Exchange I've noticed several things about the system that concern me and most of these things involve these same fees.
If you don't know what a decentralized exchange is, it's basically a trading platform where you can trade a lot of different things without having to sign up with a centralized exchange like Bitstamp or BTC-E. You'll be able to trade right there in NXt's 'ecosystem".
One thing I noticed is that while it's a cool system, there's a fee to do almost anything in it. There's a fee to send, there's a (very large 1000 Nxt) fee to create an asset and worst of all there's a fee to PLACE a buy or sell order on the asset exchange.
Most centralized exchanges like Bitstamp also charge a fee to EXECUTE an order, but NO exchange that I know of charges you a fee just for casting your line into the water.
I'm no expert day trader, but one thing I do know is that traders like to use the order book in an exchange strategically with orders that might not get executed. Some do it to take advantage of potential price spikes or sudden dips they might miss, while others use intimidatingly large sell and buy "walls" designed to inhibit or encourage trading to a desired effect, which they promptly cancel as soon as the action gets too close to actually executing their order.
I've never been able to afford a wall myself, but I have put in a ridiculously high or low limit order in Bitstamp just in case the BTC price spikes or drops rapidly and unexpectedly. Usually my gambit fails and the price moves away from my bid to an impossible range so I cancel the whole thing. In Nxt, I would be charged a fee for this. I'm not sure if this is a deal breaker for me, but I have a strong feeling it might be for many traders considering using Nxt's AE. I can also imagine a fluctuating fee being a pretty big headache for bot programmers trying to figure out how to obtain profit with the slimmest possible margins.
Of course someone who can put up a 2 Million dollar wall can afford paying these fees, but I would hazard a good guess that for many of these traders, who I imagine to have colorful & opinionated personalities, having to pay a fee to merely place an order that they never plan to execute will become a matter of principal and they will refuse to use the platform on this sort of thing alone.
I have tried to bring this up with the developers who congregate at bitcointalk.org as a potential problem for future traders, but I've been told that Nxt needs to charge these fees so that Forgers who protect the network can be compensated. My retort is that if participation is too low because the fees are too high that no one will be rewarded, but so far my concerns do not seem to be shared.
In short, the one drawback I am starting to realize with Proof-Of_Stake systems is that since no one is creating new coins with mining, that the actual stake-holders need to be incentivised to run open nodes (Forging) so the network is secured and transactions are verified quickly. If the incentives are too small, not enough people will Forge and the entire system is endangered and fees will have to be raised til motivation exists. This is something Bitcoin users will have to deal with in the future, when all the coins have been created and it is something Nxt users will have to deal with right now.

New to Etherium, not new to Bitcoin/cryptocurrency - questions?

Hey guy. Im having trouble wrapping my head around a few things, and most (all?) of the beginnewhat is Etherium apps are more "Anti-establishment" or "This is the future hype" than informative. I'm very interested but am having trouble figuring out what is up
Etherium is mostly about the idea of smart contracts, yes? IE - No need for an entity like the bank, government, etc to say who owns this house or that car.
Can you spend Etherium as a currency like with Bitcoin? Are any retailers accepting Etherium?
Is Etherium out of the rut Bitcoin is in with its whole classic vs core debate?
What are the current safest exchanges to purchase Etherium, hopefully available to Canadians? Both via Bitcoin and for fiat?
Thanks for any help you may have to offer!!

Finding my place in /r/bitcoin vs /r/btc

I subbed /btc when I started hearing about censorship in /bitcoin and really, I've never been a fan of Themos' approach (don't ask my why, just felt off) and don't get me started on Luke Jr. The guy creeps me the fuck out.
I thought it would be a throwback to when Bitcoin was discussed with enthusiasm and be more of casual arena vs the ongoing beating of the maximal drum. I also love Etherium and was intrigued by the concept of doubling bitcoin's blockchain. Something I supported at the time.
I read both subs equally and absorbing the propaganda by both has lead me to believe bitcoin cash is indeed a hostile takeover.
Does it have value? If a large enough group think's so, then yea; But the fucking salt over there about bitcoin has been growing exponentially. My final straw was Roger Ver on Bloomberg talking smack on the devs of bitcoin and telling a single side of a story when he's been with bitcoin from the get-go. He knows better, hence, he has a motive. It's like watching someone shoot the moon while playing hearts, he's all in: salt, money and all.
Does bitcoin have transaction issues? Totally. Do I think miners are greedy as hell to keep fees up? Of course! But I think these things are yet another version of the 'attacks' bitcoin has weathered and needs to get through. I don't blame anyone for attempting to dethrone bitcoin while it's going through these issues, I just have a hard time with the method. Co-opting the name, buying the bitcoin.com domain and trying to rebrand bitcoin as bitcoin core are deceptive tactics. If the tech was solid, it wouldn't rely on these things. Maybe I'm wrong, because of the strength of bitcoin, maybe these tactics are necessary.
I can say with confidence, based on the pure volume of shitposts in /bitcoin, the censorship is a fallacy. Now if they won't allow 'alt-coin' discussion, I can see that being censorship, but if there wasn't such a strong pogrom on Ver's side to sway facts on the bitcoin as a technology and brand, I doubt they'd resort to such censorship.
I'm not a maximalist. I've just been in it since 2013 and have a fair gauge of the direction bitcoin's been going and where it is going. I know the beneficial arguments to Bitcoin Cash, I don't disagree with the rational ones, but I believe them to be transitory.
When the positive posts outweigh the negatives in /btc, like they used to, I'll be back.
*OK a sense of Irony here. This was my reply to someone's post in a thread that said "Join us over at /btc". By the time I hit submit, the comment was deleted (censored?) Fuck me.

sikke NEDİR ? Detay Analiz Hakkında Her şey

Baştan Söyleyim Sıradan Bir Kripto Para Olmayacağını Tam Tersine Kendi Tabirleri ile Çok özel bir (Dijital Varlık) olacağını Düşünüyorum.
Anadoluda icat edilen ilk para
Sikke Nedir?

Yani bir sikke 1.000.000'a bölünebilir.
SikkeBank Nedir? SikkeBank, sikke platforumun da yaratılan paraların (SKK) gibi, gerçek paralarla takas edilmesini sağlayan Sikke Platformunun digital bankasıdır.
SikkeBank; çeşitli borsa sitelerinden bir önceki günün borsa verilerini toplayarak gerçek para birimleri (TL gibi) ve digital para birimlerinin (SKK gibi) değerlerini alıp günlük alış/satış ortalamalarını bulur. Saat 00:00 itibariyle bu kurları baz alarak, gün boyunca farklı para birimleri arasında işlem yapmak isteyen kullanıcılara o günkü kur değişim oranlarını uygulayarak digital varlıklarının anlık olarak gerçek para birimlerine çevirebilir..
Örnek Olay: Ahmet bey restoranında sikke (SKK) ile ödeme alıyor ama sikke değerinin aşırı dalgalanma riskine karşı sabit bir kurla çalışmak istiyor. Ahmet bey dükkanı için kullandığı SikkePos'unu ayarlayarak satışlarının hesabına TL olarak geçmesini istiyor.
Ahmet Bey'in SikkePos cihazı SikkeBank'a bağlanıp güncel kur bilgilerini alarak müşterinin ödeyeceği tutarı TL/SKK oranına göre hesaplayıp, müşteriye kaç SKK ödeme yapması gerektiğini gösterir.
Bu şu demektir: Bitcoin BlockChain blok zinciri şu an 150GB’a yaklaşmaktadır.
Blockchain’in dezantajları nedir?
BlockChain Sistemleri ve RowBlockChain BlockChain’in özellikleri nedir?

[Request] I can't even draw stick-figures: Help me with a 3-panel stick-figure comic (Details Inside)

Help me /ICanDrawThat, you're my only hope!
I'm starting a sort-of-blog, and I need help translating my idea for the header image into a non-crap drawing. The image size (on the blog) is 960x260 pixels, so it needs to be pretty long and squat. I've come up with a design/idea/concept, but I'm open to suggestions if you have any better ideas.

The blog is titled dissonant cog. and will focus on topics that tie together seemingly disparate ideas. Specifically, I will be writing about an open-source-style project that I've started. I'm building a community/group/team, implementing a distributed-leadership, self-managing, collaborative decision-making kind of organization. The project is developing a replicable model for local communities to crowdfund, build, and learn to use 3D printers.

Here's some of the topics and issues that I'll be exploring:

The Image Concept
My craptastic 3-panel effort In panel 1, we see humanity trapped in a pyramid of cogs, human hamsters running on their wheels to support some ruler-type up top.
In panel 2, we zoom in on the dissident cog. We see inside a bunch of "decentralize all the things" paraphernalia. He has somehow broken through the floor of his cog, so that it looks like the OSHW logo.
In panel 3, we see that the pyramid had come undone. The cogs are scattered/piled up as the fell, and all the people are out and about on the ground, with dashed lines to show that they now form a decentralized, distributed network

Panel 1 Closeup The whole "fancy-guy rich stuff" (monocle, pipe, champagne, moneybag) is kina meh. I'm not railing against the wealthy here, so that might give the slightly wrong impression. I really like the idea of the pyramid of hamster-wheel-cogs, and the flat platform on the top. I'd like some figure up there representing inertia, the status quo, etc. The sun behind the pyramid should cast that figure's shadow across the land.

Panel 2 Closeup This zoom-in should reveal the dissident cog's 'lair'. Imagine an insurgent, working within the system to undermine the system itself. The tools of this insurgent are all those which subvert the concentration of power, and empower individuals:
I'm not sure if this panel needs to explain how/why the pyramid falls apart, or if just implying that these tools caused it is okay.

Panel 3 Closeup The cogs should be scattered as if they were a fallen jenga tower. The sun is now free to shine its illuminating rays of knowledge on everyone. The people are out of the cogs, and standing about, connected by faint lines hinting at a distributed and decentralized network.

Second effort at panel 1 Now you see why I'm here requesting help. This time around, I wanted it to feel a bit more Tatooine-ish, with the big, heavy sun. The stick figures are running in their cogs. I left the bottom-center black, thinking that's where the dissident cog would be. I also tried to make the guy up top more king-ish.

That's what I've got so far. Please help me realize this vision! If, instead, you get the gist of what I'm going for but have a different concept, that's cool too!
