Whether you are a financial wizard or average person, anyone can join the cryptocurrency game. The key to understanding and exceling at cryptocurrency is knowledge. Each of the following cryptocurrencies attempt to improve on existing technological solutions. Cryptocurrencies can fulfill many functions, and they aim to work on issues ranging from storing medical data to providing anonymous financial transactions. Many provide a decentralized network allowing efficient anonymous transactions, and in addition, there are Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that can help ensure security. What are Cryptocurrencies? A cryptocurrency is a form of digital currency that comes as a “coin” or “token”. They are largely intangible and were originally designed to be free of a central regulatory authority, like a bank or government agency. At first, it was criticized by the traditional finance industry, but now many are embracing blockchain technology. Cryptography uses mathematical equations to ensure that the tokens are securely created, stored, and transferred. Anonymity and decentralization are the key components to most cryptocurrencies, and this is why the cryptocurrency world continues to grow in popularity.
Types of Altcoins:
Bcash (BCH) Bcash originated out of an early hard fork of bitcoin. A fork is when developers and miners of a cryptocurrency disagree on the cryptocurrency’s mining and transaction process, and when this occurs, the currency “splits”. Some developers and investors will choose to follow the original code while others will support the currency’s new “update”. As a result of such a fork, Bcash launched in 2017. BCH was created to increase the scalability of Bitcoin from one megabyte to eight megabytes which allows for larger transactions. It also removed the Segregated Witness protocol that is used in Bitcoin, which limited the block space available for transactions. Ethereum (ETH) Founded in 2015, Ethereum is one of the giants that followed Bitcoin. Ethereum is a decentralized platform that allows you to execute smart contracts and build applications, and you can essentially build other cryptocurrencies off the Ethereum platform. Its token is known as ether, and ether is used by other developers to run their own applications or as a token to buy other cryptocurrencies. In 2014, Ethereum had its first official presale. This was essentially the first initial coin offering (ICO), and these are now a popular source of funding within the industry. After 2016, Ethereum was split into Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC), and it is still one of the most valuable coins on the crypto-market space. Zcash (ZEC) Launched in 2016, Zcash is based on a decentralized and open-sourced platform. Zcash prides itself on its ability to ensure privacy and transparency during each of its transactions, and it claims it is the “https” of the crypto world. Essentially, it is added privacy to already pre-existing crypto-transactions. They even offer an added feature of “shielded” transactions, which allow for further crypto-security. Zcash developers came up with an innovation called zk-SNARK, and this revolutionized the way cryptography is used to secure crypto transactions. Dash (DASH) Dash is a more private form of bitcoin and comes with features like DarkSend and InstantX that provide added support to protect anonymous transactions. It was originally known as Darkcoin and was renamed Dash in 2015. Dash allows you to make nearly untraceable transactions. It offers stronger anonymity than most cryptocurrencies and is based on a decentralized network. Founded in 2014, it was founded by Evan Duffield and quickly gained popularity among crypto-enthusiasts and investors. It differs from other coins in that it can be mined with either a GPU or CPU. Ripple (XRP) Founded in 2012, Ripple aims to work as a global network of low-cost payment transactions. XRP works to allow banks and individuals to make international payments at low costs while ensuring a high level of transparency. You cannot mine ripple which helps reduces latency issues. It also decreases the need for high computing strength that some other coins need for mining. Many popular banks have already adapted Ripple technology for cross-border payments because it is the most popular cryptocurrency for traditional investors. Traditional investors understand ripple’s utility as an efficient method of cross-border transactions. Neo (NEO) Originally known as Antshares, Neo was founded in 2014. Called the “Chinese Ethereum”, it is the largest Chinese cryptocurrency. It utilizes smart contracts in a similar way to ETH. Neo owes much of its success to its ability to support multiple programming languages on its platform. EOS (EOS) Launched in June 2018, EOS is one of the newer currencies, and it was created by a well-known mind in the blockchain world, Dan Larimer. Before starting EOS, Larimer started and popularized Steemit which is a popular social media site that was founded on blockchain technology. EOS is founded on the same platform as Ethereum. During their ICO, EOS was able to generate close to $4 billion in funding, which is one of the highest recorded. Its proof-of-stake system aims to provide more scalability than other currencies. Also, EOS differs in that there is no mining. To replace the need for miners, block producers are rewarded in tokens depending on their rate of production. Cardano (ADA) In 2017, Cardano was founded by a co-founder of Ethereum. Carles Hoskinson hoped to combine the benefits of Ethereum as well as fulfill several other functions. ADA looks to solve the issues that come with other digital tokens by focusing on interoperability. They also hope to solve problems of scale. ADA has the ability to make financial transactions in mere seconds, when before it could take days, and this is an added benefit to those in the cryptocurrency industry. Monero (XMR) Designed to be an anonymous currency, XMR is focused on security and privacy. It was one of the older altcoins to become fully established after being founded in 2014. Unlike other virtual currencies, monero’s funding is completely dependent on grassroots community funding. XMR utilizes a rather unique technique known as “ring signatures”. With ring signatures, transactions using XMR have added anonymity. A group of cryptographic signatures will appear with each transaction, but only one of which is the “real” one. They all seem as if they were completely valid, which provides more security, and for people seeking private transactions, this is a draw to use the form of XMR for cryptocurrency. Litecoin (LTC) One of the more well-known altcoins, Litecoin has been around since its founding in 2011. Its founder, Charlie Lee, formerly worked as a Google engineer and is a well-respected figure in the blockchain-sphere. LTC is open-source and utilizes scrypt as proof-of-work. Litecoin is very similar to Bitcoin but works much faster, and it can generate blocks quicker and can confirm transactions at a higher rate. Litecoin has been adopted and endorsed by banking companies around the world because of the benefits it offers to users. Ether is like a vehicle for moving around on the ethereum platform and is sought by mostly developers looking to develop and run applications inside ethereum, or now by investors looking to make purchases of other digital currencies using ether. 3. Zcash (ZEC) Zcash, a decentralized and open-source cryptocurrency launched in the latter part of 2016, looks promising. “If bitcoin is like HTTP for money, zcash is HTTPS," is one analogy zcash uses to define itself. Zcash offers privacy and selective transparency of transactions. Thus, like https, zcash claims to provide extra security or privacy where all transactions are recorded and published on a blockchain, but details such as the sender, recipient, and amount remain private. 4. Dash (DASH) Dash (originally known as darkcoin) is a more secretive version of bitcoin. Dash offers more anonymity as it works on a decentralized master code network that makes transactions almost untraceable. Launched in January 2014, dash experienced an increasing fan following in a short span of time. This cryptocurrency was created and developed by Evan Duffield and can be mined using a CPU or GPU. In March 2015, ‘Darkcoin’ was rebranded to Dash, which stands for “digital cash” and operates under the ticker DASH. 5. Ripple (XRP) Ripple is a real-time global settlement network that offers instant, certain and low-cost international payments. Launched in 2012, ripple “enables banks to settle cross-border payments in real-time, with end-to-end transparency, and at lower costs.” Ripple’s consensus ledger (its method of conformation) is unique in that it doesn’t require mining. In this way, ripple sets itself apart from bitcoin and many other altcoins. Since Ripple’s structure doesn't require mining, it reduces the usage of computing power and minimizes network latency. Ripple believes that “distributing value is a powerful way to incentivize certain behaviors” and thus currently plans to distribute XRP primarily “through business development deals, incentives to liquidity providers who offer tighter spreads for payments, and selling XRP to institutional buyers interested in investing in XRP.” 6. Monero (XMR) Monero is a secure, private and untraceable currency. This open-source cryptocurrency was launched in April 2014 and soon spiked great interest among the cryptography community and enthusiasts. The development of this cryptocurrency is completely donation-based and community-driven. Monero has been launched with a strong focus on decentralization and scalability, and it enables complete privacy by using a special technique called “ring signatures.” With this technique, there appears a group of cryptographic signatures including at least one real participant, but since they all appear valid, the real one cannot be isolated. Because of exceptional security mechanisms like this, monero has developed something of an unsavory reputation; it has been linked to criminal operations around the world. 7. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Bitcoin Cash holds an important place in the history of altcoins because it is one of the earliest and most successful hard forks of the original bitcoin. In the cryptocurrency world, a fork takes place as the result of debates and arguments between developers and miners. Due to the decentralized nature of digital currencies, wholesale changes to the code underlying the token or coin at hand must be made due to general consensus; the mechanism for this process varies according to the particular cryptocurrency. When different factions can’t come to an agreement, sometimes the digital currency is split, with the original remaining true to its original code and the other copy beginning life as a new version of the prior coin, complete with changes to its code. Bitcoin cash began its life in August of 2017 as a result of one of these splits. The debate which led to the creation of BCH had to do with the issue of scalability; bitcoin has a strict limit on the size of blocks, 1 megabyte. BCH increases the block size from 1 MB to 8 MB, with the idea being that larger blocks will allow for faster transaction times. It also makes other changes, too, including the removal of the Segregated Witness protocol which impacts block space. 8. NEO (NEO) NEO began life in 2014. Originally called AntShares, the coin was later rebranded by creator Da Hongfei. To date, it is the largest cryptocurrency which has emerged from China and is sometimes referred to as a “Chinese Ethereum” because of its similar use of smart contracts. In 2017, NEO experienced its most successful year to date. From a value of $0.16 per token in January of 2017, NEO climbed to about $162 per token by one year later. This constitutes a return of more than 111,000%. One key to NEO’s success has been its support of programming in many existing languages, including Go, Java, C++, and others. 9. Cardano (ADA) Charles Hoskinson, one of the co-founders of ethereum, launched cardano in September of 2017. For supporters of this digital currency, ADA offers all of the benefits of ethereum, as well as many others. Cardano offers a platform for Dapps and smart contracts, like ethereum before it. Beyond that, ADA aims to solve some of the most pressing problems plaguing cryptocurrencies everywhere, including interoperability and scalability. Cardano also hopes to tackle issues related to international payments, which are typically both timely and expensive. 10. EOS (EOS) One of the newest digital currencies to make our list is EOS. Launched in June of 2018, EOS was created by cryptocurrency pioneer Dan Larimer. Before his work on EOS, Larimer founded the digital currency exchange Bitshares as well as the blockchain-based social media platform Steemit. Like other cryptocurrencies on this list, EOS is designed after ethereum, so it offers a platform on which developers can build decentralized applications. Run make && make install. If it says you do not have permission to do something, run sudo make install and enter your password.

It can also be mined! So, what is Dogecoin mining? You’ll know what hardware and what software you need to get started. You’ll also know whether or not Dogecoin mining is for you! So, where would you like to start? The beginning? Great choice. Let’s have a quick look at how Dogecoin got started. A (Very) Short History of Dogecoin In 2013, an Australian named Jackson Palmer and an American named Billy Markus became friends. They became friends because they both liked cryptocurrencies. However, they also thought the whole thing was getting too serious so they decided to create their own. Palmer and Markus wanted their coin to be more fun and more friendly than other crypto coins. They wanted people who wouldn’t normally care about crypto to get involved. You love it already, don’t you? Next, I want to talk about how mining works… What is Mining? To understand mining, you first need to understand how cryptocurrencies work. Cryptocurrencies are peer-to-peer digital currencies. This means that they allow money to be transferred from one person to another without using a bank. Every cryptocurrency transaction is recorded on a huge digital database called a blockchain. The database is stored across thousands of computers called nodes. Nodes put together groups of new transactions and add them to the blockchain. These groups are called blocks. Each block of transactions has to be checked by all the nodes on the network before being added to the blockchain. If nodes didn’t check transactions, people could pretend that they have more money than they really do (I know I would!). Confirming transactions (mining) requires a lot of computer power and electricity so it’s quite expensive. Blockchains don’t have paid employees like banks, so they offer a reward to users who confirm transactions. The reward for confirming new transactions is new cryptocurrency. Instead of digging with a shovel for gold, you’re digging with your computer for crypto coins! Each cryptocurrency has its own blockchain. Different ways of mining new currency are used by different coins where different rewards are offered. So, how do you mine Dogecoin? What’s special about Dogecoin mining? Let’s see… What is Dogecoin Mining? Dogecoin mining is the process of being rewarded with new Dogecoin for checking transactions on the Dogecoin blockchain. Simple, right? Well no, it’s not quite that simple, nothing ever is! Mining Dogecoin is like a lottery. To play the lottery you have to do some work. Well, actually your computer (or node) has to do some work! This work involves the confirming and checking of transactions which I talked about in the last section. Lots of computers work on the same block of transactions at the same time but the only one can win the reward of new coins. The one that earns the new coins is the node that adds the new block of transactions to the old block of transactions. This is completed using complex mathematical equations. The node that solves the mathematical problem first wins! It can then attach the newly confirmed block of transactions to the rest of the blockchain. Most cryptocurrency mining happens this way. However, Dogecoin mining differs from other coins in several important areas. These areas are;
Algorithm: Each cryptocurrency has a set of rules for mining new currency. These rules are called a mining or hashing algorithm.
Block Time: This is the average length of time it takes for a new block of transactions to be checked and added to the blockchain.
Difficulty: This is a number that represents how hard it is to mine each new block of currency. You can use the difficulty number to work out how likely you are to win the mining lottery. Mining difficulty can go up or down depending on how many miners there are. The difficulty is also adjusted by the coin’s protocol to make sure that the block time stays the same.
Reward: This is the amount of new currency that is awarded to the miner of each new block.
Now, let’s compare how DogeCoin mining works compared to Litecoin and Bitcoin… Mining Comparison Bitcoin uses SHA-256 to guide the mining of new currency and the other two use Scrypt. This is an important difference because Scrypt mining needs a lot less power and is a lot quicker than SHA-256. This makes mining easier for miners with less powerful computers. Fans of Litecoin and Dogecoin think that they are fairer than Bitcoin because more people can mine them. Note: In 2014, Litecoin and Dogecoin merged mining. This means they made it possible to mine both coins in the same process. Dogecoin mining is now linked with Litecoin mining. It’s like two different football teams playing home games in the same stadium! Mining Dogecoin is a lot faster than mining Litecoin or Bitcoin. The block reward is much higher too! Don’t get too excited though (sorry!). Dogecoin is still worth a lot less than Bitcoin and Litecoin. A reward of ten thousand Dogecoin is worth less than thirty US Dollars. A reward of 12.5 Bitcoin is currently worth 86,391.63 US Dollars! However, it’s not as bad as it sounds. Dogecoin mining difficulty is more than one million times less than Bitcoin mining difficulty. This means you are much more likely to win the block reward when you mine Dogecoin. Now I’ve told you about what Dogecoin mining is and how it works, would you like to give it a try? Let’s see what you need to do to become a Dogecoin miner… How to Mine Dogecoin There are two ways to mine Dogecoin, solo (by yourself) or in a Dogecoin mining pool. Note: A Dogecoin pool is a group of users who share their computing power to increase the odds of winning the race to confirm transactions. When one of the nodes in a pool confirms a transaction, it divides the reward between the users of the pool equally. Dogecoin Mining: Solo vs Pool When you mine as a part of a Dogecoin pool, you have to pay fees. Also, when the pool mines a block you will only receive a small portion of the total reward. However, pools mine blocks much more often than solo miners. So, your chance of earning a reward (even though it is shared) is increased. This can provide you with a steady new supply of Dogecoin. If you choose to mine solo then you risk waiting a long time to confirm a transaction because there is a lot of competition. It could be weeks or even months before you mine your first block! However, when you do win, the whole reward will be yours. You won’t have to share it or pay any fees. As a beginner, I would recommend joining a Dogecoin pool. This way you won’t have to wait as long to mine your first block of new currency. You’ll also feel like you’re part of the community and that’s what Dogecoin is all about! What You Need To Start Mining Dogecoin Before you start Dogecoin mining, you’ll need a few basics. They are;
A PC with either Windows, OS X or Linux operating system.
An internet connection
A Shiba Inu puppy (just kidding!)
You’ll also need somewhere to keep the Dogecoin you mine. Go to Dogecoin’s homepage and download a wallet. Note: A wallet is like an email account. It has a public address for sending/receiving Dogecoin and a private key to access them. Your private keys are like your email’s password. Private keys are very important and need to be kept completely secure. There are two different types; a light wallet and a full wallet. To mine Dogecoin, you’ll need the full wallet. It’s called Dogecoin Core. Now that you’ve got a wallet, you need some software and hardware. Dogecoin Mining Hardware You can mine Dogecoin with;
Your PC’s CPU: The CPU in your PC is probably powerful enough to mine Dogecoin. However, it is not recommended. Mining can cause less powerful computers to overheat which causes damage.

A Scrypt ASIC Miner: This is a piece of hardware designed to do one job only. Scrypt ASIC miners are programmed to mine scrypt based currencies like Litecoin and Dogecoin. ASIC miners are very powerful. They are also very expensive, very loud and can get very hot! Dogecoin Mining Software Whether you’re mining with an ASIC, a GPU or a CPU, you’ll need some software to go with it. You should try to use the software that works best with the hardware you’re using. Here’s a short list of the best free software for each choice of mining hardware;
CPU: If you just want to give mining a quick try, using your computer’s CPU will work fine. The only software I would recommend for mining using a CPU only is CPU miner which you can download for free here.
GPU: If you mine with a GPU there are more software options. Here are a few to check out;CudaMiner– Works best with Nvidia products.CGminer– Works with most GPU hardware.EasyMiner– User-friendly, so it’s good for beginners.
Scrypt ASIC miner:MultiMiner– Great for mining scrypt based currencies like Litecoin and Dogecoin. It can also be used to mine SHA-256 currencies like Bitcoin.CGminer and EasyMiner can also be used with ASIC miners.
Recommendations You’re a beginner, so keep it simple! When you first start mining Dogecoin I would recommend using a GPU like the Radeon RX 580 with EasyMiner software. Then I would recommend joining a Dogecoin mining pool. The best pools to join are multi-currency pools like Multipool or AikaPool. If you want to mine Dogecoin but don’t want to invest in all the tech, there is one other option… Dogecoin Cloud Mining Cloud mining is mining without mining! Put simply, you rent computer power from a huge data center for a monthly or yearly fee. The Dogecoin is mined at the center and then your share is sent to you. All you need to cloud mine Dogecoin is a Dogecoin wallet. Then choose a cloud mining pool to join. Eobot, Nice Hash and Genesis Mining all offer Scrypt-based cloud mining for a monthly fee. Cloud mining pools don’t share much information about themselves and how they work. It can be hard to work out if a cloud mining contract is a good value for money.
You are only renting computer power. If the price of Dogecoin goes down, you will still have to pay the same amount for something that is worthless.
Dogecoin pools have fixed contracts. The world of crypto can change very quickly. You could be stuck with an unprofitable contract for two years!

Now you know about all the different ways to mine Dogecoin we can ask the big question, can you make tons of money mining Dogecoin? So, Is Dogecoin Mining Profitable? The short answer is, not really. Dogecoin mining is not going to make you a crypto billionaire overnight. One Dogecoin is worth 0.002777 US Dollars. If you choose to mine Dogecoin solo, it will be difficult to make a profit. You will probably spend more money on electricity and hardware than you will make from Dogecoin mining. Even if you choose a Dogecoin pool or a cloud pool your profits will be small. However, if you think I am telling you to not mine Dogecoin, then you’re WRONG! Of course, I think you should mine Dogecoin! But why? Which Alt-Coins Should Be Mined?

Bitcoins are not a good choice for beginning miners who work on a small scale. The current up-front investment and maintenance costs, not to mention the sheer mathematical difficulty of the process, just doesn't make it profitable for consumer-level hardware. Now, Bitcoin mining is reserved for large-scale operations only. Litecoins, Dogecoins, and Feathercoins, on the other hand, are three Scrypt-based cryptocurrencies that are the best cost-benefit for beginners. Dogecoins and Feathercoins would yield slightly less profit with the same mining hardware but are becoming more popular daily. Peercoins, too, can also be a reasonably decent return on your investment of time and energy. As more people join the cryptocoin rush, your choice could get more difficult to mine because more expensive hardware will be required to discover coins. You will be forced to either invest heavily if you want to stay mining that coin, or you will want to take your earnings and switch to an easier cryptocoin. Understanding the top 3 bitcoin mining methods is probably where you need to begin; this article focuses on mining "scrypt" coins. Is It Worth It to Mine Cryptocoins?

If your objective is to make a few digital bucks and spend them somehow, then you just might have a slow way to do that with mining. Smart miners need to keep electricity costs to under $0.11 per kilowatt-hour; mining with 4 GPU video cards can net you around $8.00 to $10.00 per day (depending upon the cryptocurrency you choose), or around $250-$300 per month. The two catches are: 1) The up-front investment in purchasing 4 ASIC processors or 4 AMD Radeon graphic processing units 2) The market value of cryptocoins Now, there is a small chance that your chosen digital currency will jump in value alongside Bitcoin at some point. Then, possibly, you could find yourself sitting on thousands of dollars in cryptocoins. The emphasis here is on "small chance," with small meaning "slightly better than winning the lottery." If you do decide to try cryptocoin mining, definitely do so as a hobby with a very small income return. Think of it as "gathering gold dust" instead of collecting actual gold nuggets. And always, always, do your research to avoid a scam currency.

There is a discussion about nodes that came up today, where it seems I'm discouraging people from running the full QT/Core client. Yes and No. What I'm trying to make sure people understand is how things work, and that it is NOT mandatory to run a client in order to use Dogecoins (and yes, I realise that browser-based tools like coinb.in and wallet sweepers are 'clients' by strict definition). That said, more nodes is absolutely a good thing for the network. Preferrably full nodes. How do you run a full node? Just run Core/QT and open up Port 22556 on your router so it can connect to more than 8 peers. What will it cost you? You need your machine to be on 24/7/365, you need enough storage for the full blockchain (currently about 20Gb. Bitcoin is over 120Gb) and enough bandwidth to keep it in sync and share blocks with peers. A couple of Gb a month, most likely. This is best done with a desktop on a wired broadband link. Or maybe a hosted VM in the cloud. :)

MINING DOGECOIN IS UNPROFITABLE!
Put simply, there is no way to mine Dogecoin and make a profit because of the massive hashpower provided by industrial-scale Litecoin miners. Mining Doge directly stopped being viable when our hashrate exploded with the introduction of AuxPoW. Mining with CPU's and GPU's died when ASICs were introduced. And mining with a laptop WILL kill your laptop and cost you a fortune to repair or replace. Mining Litecoin with an exchange that also mines Doge and others will earn less than the electricity consumed, and you won't recover your costs. Probably ever, but certainly not in any reasonable time. Mining other currencies may be a thing, but that's beyond our scope here. This is /Dogecoin, not /GetRichMiningCryptos after all. If you want to mine the newest scamcoin for fun and profit, look elsewhere for advice. :/ Oh, and most important:

At any given time, there are half a dozen posts on the frontpage just like the one you're about to write, where the answers have already been given. Read them. Don't make people waste their time repeating themselves because you were too lazy to bother reading stuff. :P So there I was, having a quiet Sundy arvo bludge, as you do, when 42points turned up on Facebook and asked me to write a new sticky post for /dogecoin. Why would he do this, when he should be having a bludge himself, I hear you ask? Well, seems he was doing exactly that, and wanted to fob off the work he’s too slack to do himself. ;) Ah well, being a sucker for punishment, I’ll grudgingly oblige I guess. OK, first things first.
A client is a piece of software you keep on your computer which holds one or more wallets. Here are the current client versions. If you're using an older client please upgrade to the newest version prior to sending/receiving coins. Backup! Backup! Backup your wallet.dat file or private key so you can import them into the latest version of the client.
Be warned that unless you’re running Core (aka QT), you could have issues with wallets containing lots of UTXOs (Unspent Transaction Outputs - Where your coins REALLY live). Go read the ELI5 below, and keep a close eye on your transaction counts. If you DO run Core, realise that all full clients, regardless of the coin, require a copy of the blockchain and must keep it up to date. This will cost you time, storage space and bandwidth. You can save a little by downloading the bootstrap file though. I haven’t checked how recent this one is, so let me know if you find a more current version.
OK, so next, grab this wallet generator. Even if you plan on running a client(s). Because a) it does many, many cryptocurrencies, and b) you WILL need wallets at some stage over and above what you keep in your clients. Just be sure to run it locally (and offline if you’re truly paranoid).
Oh, and here’s a simple way to keep track of all your wallets using HTML. You can grab the source and modify it, then upload it wherever you need to suit your needs. You will also want a separate file with your private keys, but don’t upload that one anywhere, because if you lose your keys or someone else gets access to them, you will lose your coins.
Next, be aware that there are online wallets available. While any wallet you don’t own the keys to isn’t actually yours, and therefore isn’t safe, the following are safer than most. Dogetipbot of course is used daily by shibes on Reddit. Block.io uses multisig and gives you Doge, BTC and LTC wallets as well as testnets, and Dogechain gives you your private keys (and also offers a wallet sweeping service).
Exchanges also offer wallets, of course. Not that you should use them to store your hard-earned coins, because they can and do get hacked with monotonous regularity. But at some stage you’re going to want to trade, or hold a few uncommon coins. You could do worse than these three:
And then there’s the obligatory question of mining. Put simply, mining is for all intents and purposes dead, and has been for a long time now. The costs are greater than any possible returns. But, if you insist on doing it anyway, maybe because you inherited a miner, you can earn about 0.01 LTC/day per MH/s merge-mining at Litecoinpool. That’s about 4 cents. :(
Shibes sometimes complain that the devs are not as active in /dogecoin as they used to be. You can find them on IRC, slack or their very own sub if you need them though. Or poke sporklin, who can often help.
You can of course ask any questions here, or post them in the sub. However, do try searching first, because I guarantee every possible question has been asked many times before. And you should also subscribe and hang out in /dogeducation occasionally. There’s much awesomeness there.
From peoplma I was wondering if you could add just a couple things. A link to the coinomi android wallet, it's probably the best one out there. And a sentence somewhere along the lines of "if you need help with any dogecoin software you are welcome to make a post, but PLEASE include your OS, version number of the client, and any relevant transaction IDs that you are willing to share" if you can fit that in somewhere. Also, if you want to link to Prohashing, I'm pretty sure it's the only Scrypt mining pool that will actually pay out in doge. The others I know of pay out in litecoin or bitcoin. And it's a profit switching multipool, so gives a better return than just mining ltc/doge. UPDATE 1/21/14: I'm not updating this guide anymore. Most of the steps should still work though. See the wiki or check the sidebar for updated instructions. Before you do anything else, you need to get a wallet. Until there's a secure online wallet, this means you need to download the dogecoin client. Now open the client you just downloaded. You'll be given a default address automatically, and it should connect to peers and start downloading the dogechain (aka blockchain in formal speak). You'll know because there will be a progress bar at the bottom and at the lower right there should be a signal strength icon (TODO: add screenshots). If you've waited 2 or 3 minutes and nothing is happening, copy this:
And paste it into a new text file called dogecoin.conf, which you then place into the dogecoin app directory.
On Windows this is C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\DogeCoin

Now restart your qt client and the blockchain should start downloading in about 1-2 minutes. Once it finished downloading, you're ready to send and receive Dogecoins!

Mining is how new dogecoins are created. If you're new to crypto currencies, read this. To mine (also called "digging"), a computer with a decent GPU (graphics card) is recommended. You can also mine with your CPU, but it's not as efficient.
These instructions cover only Windows for now. To mine, you'll need to figure out what GPU you have. It'll be either AMD/ATI or Nvidia. The setup for both is approximately the same.
Step One: Choose a pool
There's a list of pools on the wiki. For now it doesn't really matter which one you choose. You can easily switch later. Step two: Set up pool account
The pool you chose should have a getting started page. Read it and follow the instructions. Instructions vary but the general idea is:
Create an account
Create a worker under the account
Grab the mining URL (usually on the getting started page)
Setup your cash out options in your account settings by entering one of your wallet's receiving addresses
When you're done with this, you'll need to know:
Your account, worker name, and worker password
The mining (stratum) URL (usually the pool's URL followed by a port)
Step three: Download mining software
For best performance you'll need the right mining software.
Create a text file in the same folder as your miner application. Inside, put the command you'll be running (remove brackets). For AMD it's cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://: -u -p For Nvidia it's cudaminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://: -O : Substitute the right stuff in for the placeholders. Then on the next line of the text file type pause. This will let you see any errors that you get. Then save the file with any name you want, as long as the file extension is .bat. For example mine_serverName.bat.
Step five: Launch your miner
Just open the .bat file and a command line window should pop up, letting you know that the miner is starting. Once it starts, it should print out your hash rate. If you now go to the pool website, the dashboard should start showing your hashrate. At first it'll be lower than what it says in the miner, but that's because the dashboard is taking a 5 minute average. It'll catch up soon enough. NOTE: Anormalhashrateisbetween50Kh/suptoeven1Mh/sdependingonyourGPU.
You're now mining Dogecoins
That's it, nothing more to it.
CPU mining isn't really recommended, because you'll be spending a lot on more on power than you'd make from mining Dogecoin. You could better spend that money on buying Dogecoin by trading. But if you have free electricity and want to try it out, check out this informative forum post.
Trading has been difficult so far, but Dogecoin just got added to a few new exchanges. If you don't have a giant mining rig, this is probably the best way to get 100k or more dogecoins at the moment. I'll write up a more complete guide, but for now check out these sites:
Faucets are sites that give out free coins. Usually a site will give out somewhere between 1 and 100 Dogecoin. Every site has its own time limits, but usually you can only receive coins once every few hours, or in some cases, days. It's a great way to get started. All you do is copy your address from the receive section of your wallet and enter it on some faucet sites. Check out /dogecoinfaucets for more. If you go to each site on there you might end up with a couple hundred Dogecoin!
This method is pretty straightforward. Post your receiving address, and ask for some coins. Such poor shibe. The only catch is, don't do it here! Please go to /dogecoinbeg.
Other redditors can give you Dogecoin by summoning the tip bot, something like this: +dogetipbot 5 doge This might happen if you make a good post, or someone just wants to give out some coins. Once you receive a tip you have to accept it in a few days or else it'll get returned. Do this by following the instructions on the message you receive in your inbox. You reply to the bot with "+accept". Commands go in the message body. Once you do that, the bot will create a tipping address for you, and you can use the links in the message you receive to see your info, withdraw coins to your dogecoin-qt wallet, see your history, and a bunch of other stuff. As a bonus, so_doge_tip has a feature where you can get some Dogecoins to start with in exchange for how much karma you have. To do this, send the message "+redeem DOGE" to so_doge_tip. You'll need to create a tipping account if you don't have one. If you want to create a tipping account without ever being tipped first, message either of the bots with "+register" and an address will be created for you.

Writing this predominantly for crypto-newbies. Newbies need to know the difference between bitcoin and litecoin and sometimes we forget how confusing this space can be for new individuals. Litecoin isn’t that much different from Bitcoin. Matter of fact litecoin is often referred to as the silver to bitcoins gold. Litecoin was created in October, 2011 by Charlie Lee who at the time was working for Google. Charlie has stated that his vision for Litecoin is to be complementary to Bitcoin.
What are the differences?
At a fundamental level, the main difference between bitcoin and litecoin is the mining algorithm used to achieve consensus. Bitcoin uses SHA-256. Litecoin uses Scrypt. SHA-256 being the more complex of the two, however, SHA-256 is susceptible to ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) and Scrypt (initially) was able to mitigate the effects of ASICs. An ASIC is hardware designed specifically to mine bitcoin. A miner who has access to ASICs has a competitive advantage over those who do not. For some time, scrypt wasn’t susceptible to ASICs which meant more individuals could participate in the mining processes of Litecoin (as opposed to pool mining or owning a large amount of ASICs) however, this has all changed as there are now ASICs available to mine scrypt currencies.
Another technical difference between bitcoin and litecoin is the max supply of coins that can be mined. Bitcoin has a max supply of 21 million compared to litecoin’s 84 million. The means litecoin should always be cheaper than bitcoin (this is where the silver to bitcoin’s gold comes from).
Block time is another technical difference between bitcoin and litecoin. Block time is the average amount of time it takes for block to be mined. Bitcoin has a block time of ~10min compared to litecoin’s ~2.5min. This means litecoin transactions on average will be faster than bitcoin. So that’s the main differences between litecoin and bitcoin. As you can see, not to much different although the faster transaction times via litecoin is definitely a bonus. What do you guys think?

I've been considering purchasing a mining rig for a few months now and am ready to do so, but have some questions I've been unable to find straight answers for in my research. My initial investment is going to be $200-$300 that I am for the most part willing to lose, as this is just a hobby for the time being. I will probably start with an ASIC miner for SHA-256 based coins, as it seems to be the cheaper and easier choice for a beginner. I will not be looking to mine bitcoins as I understand the difficulty is ridiculously high, but rather would like to join an altcoin mining pool. So here are my questions: 1) Would it be better to start with a rasberry pi/USB block erupter set up which mines about 3 GH/s or a pre-built Block Erupter Cube that can mine about 30 GH/s? I can purchase the cube for about $100 more than the rasberry pi set up. What would be the difference in electricity costs on these units? 2) I understand that there are both SHA-256 based coins and Scrypt based coins. If I were to join a mining pool like hashco.ws where the pool switches cryptocurrencies often, will my ASIC miner be able to contribute to mining Scrypt based coins as well? How does that all work? 3) What returns can I expect to see mining at 30 GH/s on a site like hashco.ws or any other similar site? Obviously this will be a very rough estimate but really I'd just like to know if I'll be able to break even on electricity costs. Well its been 6 months and there are no hardware stability issues. 6 Cards running at ~80C 24/7 for 6months. They run flawlessly. Thermal paste could probably be re-applied now. The point is, if you have a clean PC and know how to troubleshoot hardware you aren't going to damage your computer or graphics cards. There are so many coins where do I start? Register at your pool. Create a worker. Go to the "getting started page" and copy the host "stratum+tcp://stratum.rapidhash.net" and port number "3333" and then you can enter your workepassword details and start mining. You can then carefully adjust your parameters to increase your mining speed. Increasing intensity too high can crash your card. What is a miner? A miner is a computer set up to solve cryptographic hashes in the litecoin network. Once a clump of these hashes, or a block, is mined, litecoins pop out! It's like opening a box of chocolates, except you know what you're gonna get :) Miners also handle transaction confirmations, making sure no single coin is double-spent. Setting up your computer to be a miner What kind of computer do I need? Optimally, you'd have a good power supply and a couple decent Radeon/ATI/AMD graphics cards. Because of litecoin's hash algorithm, the gap between mining with graphics cards and processors is less than with most other cryptocurrencies, meaning that mining with some desktop processors may be worth it after electricity costs. Note that mining with laptops is not recommended because of the heat generated by mining, and mining with NVIDIA graphics cards may not be worth the cost. How do I know if litecoin mining will be profitable for me? First, check how fast you'll be mining with your hardware, how many litecoins you'll mine in a day, and how much litecoins are worth. Now, multiply the number of litecoins per day by their worth. Then, find out the power draw of your hardware, and calculate energy cost. Then finish by subtract energy cost from your daily earnings. If your number is positive, you're making that much money per day. If negative, you're losing money. Keep in mind that the worth of litecoins goes up/down, and you have to earn the cost of your hardware before you churn a profit. Mining difficulty also goes up/down, depending on how many people are mining how fast in relation to how many litecoins are supposed to be generated how fast. See the economics(coming soon) post for more info. Okay, I did all that. How do I start? All you have to do is download a program and change some settings (later in the guide), and you're ready to go. If you're comfortable with configurations and the command line, Reaper and cgminer are your best friends. Otherwise, GUIMiner-scrypt is right for you. If you want to mine on your processor, download the "batteries included" miner via this link and setup should be relatively self-explanatory. Do I mine alone? Due to the difficulty of mining, we recommend that you mine with a pool where multiple people mine together. Visit your pool's about or help page for proper miner settings, which we're about to get to in-depth! Under the hood Configuring your miner (aka the hard part) Before we get started, you should become familiar with these terms:
host: Your pools website
port: The internet port your computer uses to connect to your pool
worker: Anything that mines is a worker. Just a way for you and your pool to keep track of what's mining how.
user: In mining programs, the user is the name of your worker, which by default tends to be poolusername.1 or poolusername_1, _2, etc.
pass: Password for your worker, NOT your pool password. This can usually be anything.
None of those will have any affect on how fast you mine. The settings that we'll be focusing on are:
worksize: Exactly what it sounds like
thread-concurrency: Setting that involves computations happening simultaneously
vectors: Involves how memory is used
aggression/intensity: How aggressively your computer mines
threads_per_gpu: How many threads of data to process on a GPU, like threads of a CPU. Anything beyond 1 usually doesn't increase hashrate on modern cards.
device: First GPU is device 0, second is device 1, etc.
If you're using GUIMiner-scrypt, there are default settings for different cards (lower right dropdown). I'm mining on a 7870. Here is what it looks like for me. You can follow along with the rest of this guide to optimize your settings. GUIMiner-scrypt is just a GUI to cgminer and reaper anyways. If you are using a command-line miner, like reaper and cgminer, I recommend you download and isntall Notepad++ or SublimeText if on Linux. Reaper is currently considered to be the best tool for mining. After you unzip your downloaded file, in the folder you'll find reaper.conf. It should look something like this:
As you see, my thread concurrency is slightly different from the default of GUIMiner-scrypt. I found that this concurrency gives me the best hashrate! NOTE: I do not use cgminer to mine litecoin. If you plan on using cgminer, which offers more hardware-controlling settings, in the cgminer folder you will want to create a text file. Then, open that text file w/ Notepad++ or SublimeText, then Save As > cgminer.con > file type > all. This will save the file with the proper name and as the proper type. Note that cgminer does not support high concurrencies. For me, cgminer.conf would look something like:
You saw some settings similar to what we saw in Reaper's litecoin.conf. The other settings have to do with my card's clocks, voltage, and fan. This is covered in the overclocking section right below! Overclocking (aka the risky part) Okay, first off I'm not responsible if you cause damage to your parts. Please research safe overclock settings for your card. Second, don't be afraid. Modern hardware has many safety features in place that help prevent mayhem like me...lol jk this isn't a car insurance add. For your better understanding, become familiar with these terms:
Voltage/vddc: Amount of electrical current supplied to your card
Power Limit: Determines at what temperature your card throttles itself
Core Clock: Speed of your memory's core, similar to CPU core clocks
Memory Clock: Speed of GPU's GRAM, similar to RAM speed
Fan speed (%): Determines the RPM of your fan once your card reaches certain temperatures.
No one setting controls how effectively you mine; what matters most when it comes to clocks is the ratio between your core/memory clocks. Generally, a ratio of 0.7 or below is best. You will need to experiment. If you're using cgminer, you can control card settings from the conf file. However, if you aren't, I recommend using MSI Afterburner as your overclocking tool. You will need to unlock some settings. Using my cgminer settings, MSI Afterburner looks like this. I have found these settings to be the most stable while bringing me a high hashrate. Other people's optimum settings You can check the sidebar for the hardware comparison chart, but it is rarely updated and has huge sways in results. It is a good starting place.
